Fall 2011 Trends: The Turtleneck
This is another of those topics born out of a conversation at Lincoln Center, waiting for a show to start. To wit: "Man, they're throwing a whole lot of turtlenecks down the runway this season, aren't they?" And if you detected wariness in that sentence, you are a very dutiful and wise minion. It's true; we're, shall we say, not partial to the turtleneck. It's not that we've never seen a good one, it's just that it's one of those style elements that can so easily go wrong. In short: It's just not for everyone.
Even so, looking over this array of long-necked lovelies stomping the runways, it should be said that winning the genetic lottery isn't necessarily a one-way ticket to Turtle Town. Even on these gals, some of them look as they always look to us: a little fussy, a little clumsy, lacking in any sex appeal, and connoting a sort of religious-cult propriety. Very Sister-Wife.
But we were also surprised to find that we like quite a few. Let's break it down. Have a seat.
We kind of like the sheer factor here.
And surprisingly, these all work for us, for the most part. A lot of that has to do with proportion; the turtleneck balanced out by a heavy sweater, a large collar, a full skirt, or a wild print.
Mmmm. No. A bit Star Trek-y.
Those two in the middle have us confused, because upon viewing them, we immediately got both the theme song to The Cosby Show and the theme song to Zoom stuck in our heads.
That Martin Grant is gorgeous.
So, minions. Weigh in. Will we all be returning to the days of overheated necks come the fall?
